The Brazilian Real (BRL) is the official currency in Brazil. The exchange rate as of March 2006 was BRL 2.15 = USD 1.00. Major hotels and banks exchange and take U.S. dollars and Euros, but the street commerce rarely accepts foreign currency. Anyways, Brasilia is well served by money exchange facilities. Major credit cards are widely accepted all over Brazil. Also, the ATM facilities accept credit and debit cards affiliated to major bank networks.
It is always good to have yellow fever vaccine before coming to Brazil, particularly if you plan to go outdoors or travel within Brazil. Health authorities require taking the vaccination at least ten (10) days before travel to Brazil.
Laptops and electronic equipment
Very rarely, the customs authorities in Brazil search these equipments for import into Brazil by visitors. Should that be the case, you can introduce them in a temporary basis by filling the appropriate customs forms available at the port of entrance. This procedure does not involve any costs, taxes or duties to the traveler. Further information is available at http://www.receita.fazenda.gov.br/principal/Ingles/faq.htm
